Medical-Grade Silicone Rubber Selection: Why “Just Right” Matters More Than “High Hardness”?

In medical device manufacturing, silicone tubing is often just a “small component,” yet it directly impacts the stability of the equipment and the reliability of the product.

Recently, we have received inquiries from numerous medical device companies, with a highly concentrated focus:

Medical-grade extruded silicone for peristaltic pump tubing.

This prompts us to reconsider a question—

Selection of Materials for Peristaltic Pump Tubing So, what really is the key?

It’s not the case that harder is always better, nor is softer necessarily preferable.

Many engineers, when selecting materials, habitually start by asking, “What’s the hardness?”

This is certainly an important parameter. However, for peristaltic pump tubing, hardness is only the starting point—not the end.

● Rigid tubing: While delivery is smooth, repeated compression by the peristaltic pump rollers results in insufficient rebound, which can lead to flow instability.

● Soft tube body: Provides a gentle tactile experience, but is prone to collapse under pressure; once the tube wall deforms, it cannot regain its original shape and will fail outright.

The core requirement for peristaltic pump tubing is that, once a roller compresses the tube, it must immediately spring back. Therefore, the truly professional material-selection approach seeks to strike a balance between “preventing tube collapse” and “ensuring rapid rebound.”

This is also why an increasing number of peristaltic pump tubing manufacturers are opting for silicone compounds that offer medium-to-low hardness, high resilience, and excellent resistance to collapse.

We offer not just a single hardness level, but a comprehensive, medical-grade solution.

For the application scenario of peristaltic pump tubing, we have launched the SH-32XX medical-grade extruded solid adhesive.

This material employs a platinum-catalyzed vulcanization system, eliminating the need for additional vulcanizing agents, and is safe, clean, and odorless. It has passed relevant certifications such as FDA and LFGB, exhibits excellent extrusion dimensional stability, and is well-suited for continuous production.

More importantly, its rebound performance and resistance to collapse remain stable even under the repeated compressive action of peristaltic pump rollers, effectively ensuring flow accuracy and long-term service life.

Hardness is open to discussion, but what matters more is whether it “fits” or not.

We don’t cling to any specific hardness value.

Because different manufacturers and formulations can result in significantly varying tactile feel, rebound, and resistance to compression set, even when the stated hardness is the same.

Our preferred approach is:

Please share your application scenario, equipment specifications, and performance requirements, and we’ll help you select or tailor the most suitable materials.

SH-32XX is a well-established formulation system that also offers a degree of flexibility.

If you have specific performance goals, we can discuss the most suitable solution together.
